Ducted Systems

Ducted systems are a popular and economical choice if you wish to air condition your whole house. They provide reverse cycle comfort which means they can both cool your home in summer and heat your home in winter.

Ducted systems can be installed in both new and existing homes, provided the home has enough ceiling space for the ductwork and the indoor unit.

Ducted air conditioning systems consist of the following components:

  • The outdoor unit – also called a condenser or compressor. This unit runs the system and delivers the refrigerant to the indoor unit. It is located outside the home and can be installed on a concrete pad, wall brackets or roof mounted.

  • The indoor unit – also called a fan coil unit. This unit distributes the air via ductwork to the various grilles within the rooms of the house. It is located in the ceiling space of the home.

  • Ductwork – both flexible duct and hard duct are used to transport the air throughout the home. Ductwork generally runs through the ceiling space.

  • Grilles – a variety of outlet grilles are available to choose from. These are the visible part of the air conditioning system in each room and can be positioned in the ceiling or walls.

  • Return air grille – this grille is also visible in the home and is usually located in a hallway. This grille contains a filter and returns the air back through the indoor unit.

  • Condensate drain – as the system operates the fan coil in the indoor unit generates condensation. A drain is required to remove this small collection of water to an external drain or gutter.

  • Zone motors – these motors give you the flexibility to control what rooms you want air conditioned and save you money in running costs. You might only want to cool the bedrooms on a hot summer’s night rather than cool the entire house.

  • Control Panel – This electronic panel allows the system to be programmed. Temperature, air flow and for those that don’t like to wake up to a cold house on a winters morning – a timer! Choose what temperature, what time and what rooms you want air conditioned.
